The end of August always brings an end to what is termed as the silly season in politics. It is a time when the media concentrate on real politics again and it is also a period that will see the start of the general election campaign in earnest. All of this makes me wonder as to what the main issues will be in the run up to what I believe is one of the most important elections that this country has faced in many years. I say this because people will be faced with an option of continuing with the present Fianna Fail / Progressive Democrats administration which will be in power for nearly 10 years. In that time we have seen many changes in Irish society. Some good but others not so good. Alternatively there is a genuine alternative proposed by Labour and Fine Gael.
There will be an opportunity at the next election to not only change a government but I hope, to change the type of society we have. We must not be content with just changing the faces around the cabinet table but rather there needs to be major change in the direction that this country is taking. Will the proposed Labour Party / FG government bring that about. I certainly hope so but it will depend on what is contained in the agreed policy proposals emanating from both parties. However we are a long way from that. Firstly from a Labour Party point of view we must ensure a greater return of Labour deputies to Dail Eireann. Without a doubt this topic will reappear in many blogs over the coming months.

cp, thanks for that. I have been known to criticise government however if we criticise government policy we must put forward a viable alternative.
